Project Name: Aquaponics and hydroponics classroom renovation
Location: Oley Valley High School
Organizations involved in the project: FFA, AG program, engineering classes
Project Summary: We renovated a classroom to house our aquaponics and hydroponics systems.
What Steps did your organization take to complete the project?
Or AG program worked with the engineering classes to design the classroom. They measured out a catch system that would contain all the water in the systems if it were to leak after designing the room. We moved the systems into the room.
What challenges did you face, and how were they addressed?
Currently, we are facing issues with flies in out aquaponics beds. We are using fly tape and wasps to control those populations. We also had a power outage at one point which shut down the system, and 30 of the fish in the system died. We are working on designing an alert system in the event of a future shutdown.
What impact has the project had on your campus and the community?
We use this classroom in nearly all of our classes to supplement plant and food science education. Other schools tour our facilities to get ideas for implementing at their schools. The produce we grow in out facilities are donated to the school cafeteria and local food bank.
